Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called for the fair distribution of water from common rivers on the occasion of historic Farakka Day.
In a statement issued on Friday (15 May), Jamaat Secretary General and former MP Mia Golam Parwar said the historic Farakka Long March led by leader of the toiling masses Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani on 16 May 1976 was a bold and significant step towards establishing the people’s rightful share of water.
He said the movement demanding Bangladesh’s fair share of Ganges water had generated widespread reaction not only within the country but also in the international arena.
Golam Parwar described the fair distribution of water from common rivers as an important national issue that remains unresolved for Bangladesh.
He said the problem could be resolved peacefully through mutual respect, fairness and adherence to international river laws.
Marking Farakka Day, the Jamaat leader paid deep tribute to Bhasani and all those who participated in the movement, and called for national unity to protect the country’s interests, environment and people’s livelihoods.
