The Jatiya Party has decided to take part in the upcoming local government elections.

The party also announced plans to strengthen its organisational activities across the country, including in Dhaka, through a special central delegates’ meeting scheduled for next month, said a press release.

The decision was made at a presidium meeting held on Saturday at the residence of the party chairman in Gulshan-2. The meeting was chaired by party Chairman and former foreign minister Anisul Islam Mahmud.

The session began with an opening speech by the party’s Secretary General and former minister ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader.

In his address, Anisul urged the government to take necessary measures to address the ongoing energy crisis and curb rising commodity prices. He also emphasised the importance of ensuring measles vaccination for children nationwide.

Referring to the aftermath of the July uprising, he called on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to withdraw what he described as false and harassing cases filed against Jatiya Party leaders and activists, as well as journalists, professionals, businesspeople, and ordinary citizens across the country, including in the capital.

In his welcome address, Ruhul highlighted various initiatives aimed at strengthening the party at the grassroots level. He said that promoting the development activities of party founder Hussain Muhammad Ershad among the people would help restore public confidence and bring the party back to state power.

However, he stressed the need for unity and organisational strength within the party.

He also urged the Ministry of Home Affairs and law enforcement agencies to take stricter measures to prevent terrorism and extortion.

Among others, speeches were delivered by Executive Chairman Advocate Mujibul Haque Chunnu, Senior Co-Chairman Advocate Kazi Firoz Rashid, Co-Chairmen Syed Abu Hossain Babla, Zahirul Islam Zahir, and Mostafa Al Mahmud.

The meeting was also attended by presidium members and other leaders, including Nasrin Jahan Ratna, Masrur Mawla, Nazma Akter, Arifur Rahman Khan, Prof Nurul Islam Milon, Sardar Shahjahan, Jahangir Hossain Manik, Fakhrul Ahsan Shahjada, Md Belal Hossain, Nurul Islam Omar, Amanat Hossain Amanat, Jahangir Alam Pathan, Shah Jamal Rana, Sheikh Matlub Hossain Leon, Nazneen Sultana, and HM Golam Reza.
