A significant chapter of Bangladesh’s politics came to an end on Tuesday morning with the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia (Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un). An unwavering champion of democracy, a fearless architect of Bangladesh’s progress, and a steadfast voice for the oppressed, she stood as a unifying symbol for the nation. A true patriot and respected leader, Begum Zia earned admiration and affection from people across all political lines.
Her departure has created an irreplaceable void in the country’s politics. The people of Bangladesh have lost a trusted guardian. The younger generation has lost a guide. Women have lost a source of inspiration and affection. The oppressed have lost their courage for struggle. Loved and respected by people of all political persuasions, she bid farewell, leaving everyone in tears and creating an unfillable gap in Bangladesh.
Yet, I believe Begum Zia’s death is not the end—she is immortal. On the winter morning of December 30, she physically left us and returned to the Creator. But Begum Zia will live on through her works and her ideals. Her principles will never die. As long as Bangladesh exists, Begum Khaleda Zia will live on in the hearts of the people.
Millions will be inspired by her life’s work. The people of Bangladesh will remember her sacrifices. Every woman, every child will honor her, always, for she worked tirelessly to build a better Bangladesh for women and children. The history of her struggle will forever inspire the people of this nation.
In every struggle for democracy, she will remain a model for activists. Should Bangladesh ever fall under authoritarian rule again, Begum Zia will be the guiding light toward freedom. She will always be a pathfinder for the oppressed, who will look to her for guidance in their struggles.
Her life demonstrated immense patience, which serves as a lesson for all. Her life and philosophy have the power to develop and encourage anyone. Begum Zia’s 80-year life was complete—every stage of it set an example. She was an ideal partner, dedicating her most beloved person to the country’s freedom. During the nine-month war, she fought a different kind of battle with her two young children. After victory, she quietly supported her beloved husband.
When Ziaur Rahman was martyred for the country, she preserved and popularized his ideals. Begum Zia was an exemplary mother who raised her two children to become true human beings. She was a compassionate leader, devoted to public welfare throughout her political life.
She was a trailblazer for women’s empowerment in Bangladesh, promoting female education and creating employment opportunities. Begum Zia was a great advocate for children’s rights, providing free education and enacting laws to protect their rights. She was a farmer-friendly, people-oriented leader, introducing agricultural loans and supporting rural development.
Her contributions to industrialization in Bangladesh are undeniable. Her initiatives in the private sector laid the foundation for economic progress. Begum Zia was also a skilled diplomat, elevating Bangladesh’s global standing, fostering friendship with all nations, and earning respect worldwide.
Begum Zia was an extraordinary and exemplary politician. From the 1980s onward, she remained one of Bangladesh’s most popular and influential leaders, a model for future ideal politicians. In her political life, she never compromised her principles and pursued peaceful movements to realize her ideals. She will continue to inspire both present and future generations.
She endured persecution, limitless oppression, and imprisonment without yielding. She never gave up, never retreated, and fought steadfastly, ultimately achieving victory. She upheld decorum and ethics in politics, never attacking opponents with vulgarity, setting a standard for political propriety.
Begum Zia will therefore remain immortal. To advance Bangladesh and build a better nation, we must follow her ideals and learn from her life and work. She is the beacon of Bangladesh, our guiding light.
