A university is more than an assemblage of buildings, classrooms and laboratories. At its best, it is a living institution where knowledge is created, minds are nurtured, values are cultivated and the leaders of tomorrow are being prepared. In Bangladesh’s evolving landscape of higher education, the University of Science and Technology Chittagong (USTC) has carved out a distinctive place through more than three decades of academic endeavour, medical education, research, innovation and human resource development.
Established in Chattogram as the country’s second private university and the first private university in the port city, USTC has travelled a long and remarkable journey. From its modest beginnings, the university has gradually developed into a diversified institution of higher learning with an increasingly strong emphasis on quality education, research, technology and international outlets.
At the heart of this journey lies the vision of National Professor Dr Nurul Islam, a pioneering educationist who believed that quality education and research were indispensable to building a prosperous, developed and humane society. His vision was to create an institution where internationally oriented education would be accessible to students in Bangladesh and where academic excellence would go hand in hand with ethical values, humanity and social responsibility.
That vision continues to shape USTC’s identity. Its classrooms, laboratories, research activities, teachers and thousands of graduates represent different dimensions of a journey that began with a dream and evolved into a prestigious educational institution.
One of the most distinguished chapters in USTC’s history is its contribution to medical education. The Institute of Applied Health Sciences (IAHS), established in 1989 with only 42 students, opened a new chapter in private medical education in Bangladesh. Over the years, the institution developed a reputation in medical education and is now an affiliated institution of Chittagong Medical University.
The international character of IAHS has also contributed significantly to USTC’s broader identity. Students from Bangladesh and foreign countries, including Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Palestine and Sudan, have attended this university for their studies. Such diversity has helped create an educational environment in which students from different cultural and national backgrounds can learn together, exchange experiences and develop a broader understanding of the world.
USTC has sought to respond to this changing educational paradigm through updated curricula, practical learning, digital education, industry-linked training and research-based teaching. The objective is to nurture critical thinking, creativity, innovation, leadership and professional competence alongside academic knowledge. Such an approach can help students to become better prepared for a rapidly changing employment landscape, where adaptability, technological literacy, communication skills and problem-solving abilities are increasingly important.
The true measure of a university cannot be limited to academic results alone. The environment in which students study, interact, conduct research and develop their personalities is equally important. USTC’s permanent campus combines academic facilities with a range of learning and student-support infrastructure. Its educational environment includes smart classrooms, seminar halls, and an auditorium, providing skill-development facilities, laboratories and library resources. A language laboratory supports students in developing communication skills. USTC also emphasises recognising student achievement. Gold and silver medals, scholarships, merit waivers and financial assistance are among the initiatives described in the institution’s development narrative.
USTC is led by an outstanding community of scholars who conduct and support the University’s academic activities. With more than 150 faculty members possessing strong academic backgrounds and professional credentials, the University maintains a high standard of teaching and research. Many of the faculty members hold doctoral degrees from renowned universities.
A university’s long-term academic reputation is closely connected with its capacity for research and knowledge creation. Recognising this, USTC has placed research among its major institutional priorities. Institutional progress requires continuity of vision, strategic planning and effective management. USTC’s present development narrative places emphasis on carrying forward the ideals of its founder while responding to the demands of contemporary higher education.
The USTC Trust, under the leadership of its Chairman Ahmed Iftekharul Islam, together with the active participation of members of the Board of Trustees, has been pursuing institutional development with emphasis on infrastructure, research, international collaboration, digital transformation and academic quality. Current development initiatives include modernisation of academic buildings, expansion of smart classrooms, improvement of laboratories, strengthening of information technology infrastructure, new research initiatives, industry-academia collaboration and expansion of international partnerships.
The next chapter of USTC’s journey is unfolding at a time when higher education itself is undergoing profound transformation. Artificial intelligence, digital technology, biotechnology, health sciences, environmental sustainability and the Fourth Industrial Revolution are redefining the skills and knowledge required by individuals and societies. Against this backdrop, USTC has identified several areas for future development, including greater internationalisation of research, interdisciplinary research, AI and emerging-technology-based education, innovation and entrepreneurship, stronger industry-academia collaboration and human resource development aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.
Strengthening international academic partnerships, global research networks and the university’s presence in international rankings are also identified as longer-term institutional aspirations. The story of USTC is ultimately not only a story of buildings, programmes, laboratories or institutional milestones. It is a story of people, students who have pursued their dreams, teachers who have shared knowledge, researchers who have sought new answers, administrators who have supported institutional development and a founding vision that placed education, research and humanity at the centre of national progress.
The sustainable identity of a university is created by the knowledge it generates, the values it nurtures and the human potential it helps unlock. In that continuing journey, USTC aspires to remain a centre of learning, research and innovation, and a contributor to the making of a knowledge-driven, technologically capable and humane Bangladesh.
