Construction of the much-awaited bridge over the River Ratnai on the Lalmonirhat-Kurigram link road remains unfinished despite three deadline extensions, causing continued hardship for thousands of commuters.
The repeated delays have also raised concerns over alleged irregularities in the project. The 130.8-metre bridge is being built in Kulaghat Union of Lalmonirhat Sadar Upazila at a cost of Tk21 crore under the Roads and Highways Department (RHD). The project also involved the acquisition of 285.9 decimals of land. Dhaka-based Concrete and Steel Technology Ltd secured the contract and began work on 8 March 2023.
The new bridge is being constructed beside the existing steel Bailey bridge, which serves as a key route connecting Lalmonirhat and Kurigram districts. Thousands of people use the aging structure daily despite its deteriorating condition and frequent traffic congestion, particularly when heavy vehicles cross.
Although the project timeline has been extended three times, construction remains incomplete. According to the Lalmonirhat RHD office, around 85% of the work has been completed.
Local residents have alleged widespread irregularities, including deviations from the approved design, use of substandard materials and delays in construction. They also claimed the connecting road is being built with unnecessary curves, increasing the risk of accidents.
Sources familiar with the project alleged that while 600 feet of retaining wall was approved, only about 300 feet have been constructed. They also claimed that less than half of the allocated 32,000 cubic feet of boulders have been used. Abu Bakr, a resident of the area, said commuters continue to suffer as they are forced to use the old Bailey bridge. “We had hoped the new bridge would ease communication with the district town, but the delay has prolonged our difficulties,” he said.
Engineer SM Reza Morshed, who is overseeing the project on behalf of the contractor, said work on the approach roads has yet to be finalised.
Lalmonirhat RHD Executive Engineer Debashish Saha said approximately 85% of the project has been completed. “The remaining work will be completed soon, and the bridge will be opened to traffic,” he said.
Locals expressed hope that once completed, the bridge will significantly improve connectivity between Lalmonirhat and Kurigram, boosting communication and economic activities in the region.
