Returning officer directs judicial committee action

The returning officer concerned has instructed the Electoral Inquiry and Judicial Committee to investigate and take action regarding the incident of throwing eggs at Nasiruddin Patwary, the National Citizen Party (NCP) candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency.
Returning Officer Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury issued the directive to the Electoral Inquiry Committee on Saturday. He also attached the written statements of the Ramna Police Station OC and the college principal to the directive.
The letter said, “On 27 January, during the ongoing election period, a Pitha Festival was organised at Habibullah Bahar College, and rival candidates were invited to the event.
“During this programme, news spread through print, electronic, and social media that Dhaka-8 candidate Nasiruddin Patwary was attacked with eggs, causing disorder. It appears that by holding this event during the pre-election period, the Code of Conduct for the Upcoming National Parliamentary Election 2025 was violated.”
The letter further mentioned, “Following a request for reports from the officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station and an explanation from the principal of Habibullah Bahar College, both have submitted their respective statements.”

According to the police, upon arriving at Habibullah Bahar University College, Ramna Police Station officers and personnel saw that approximately 2,500 to 3,000 students were present on campus. Also present were activists and supporters from the 11-party alliance, including Chhatra Shibir, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, and the NCP, awaiting the arrival of Nasiruddin Patwary. On the other hand, activists and supporters of the BNP and Chhatra Dal were present to celebrate the arrival of Mirza Abbas Uddin Ahmed. In the written report, the OC further stated, “At approximately 11:40 a.m. on Tuesday, when Nasiruddin Patwary joined the Pitha Festival, intense tension and a chaotic situation broke out. 
We immediately attempted to maintain order with the help of members of the law enforcement agency and the institution’s teachers... While he was delivering a speech from the balcony, unruly individuals from the crowd threw eggs and water at him and chanted various slogans aimed at him.
