Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Friday strongly condemned remarks by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton over the alleged ownership of 700 auto-rickshaws by a political party’s secretary general.
The party demanded that the DNCC administrator provide verifiable evidence to support his remarks or withdraw the statement and publicly apologise.
In a statement issued on 9 October, Jamaat Assistant Secretary General and Secretary of its Central Publicity and Media Department, Advocate Ehsanul Mahbub Zubayer, said the administrator’s remarks, reported by various media outlets, appeared to refer to Jamaat Secretary General and former MP Mia Golam Porwar.
Zubayer described the information as imaginary, untrue, baseless and fabricated, expressing strong condemnation and protest against the remarks.
He said the public expected a responsible government official such as the DNCC administrator to make responsible, fact-based and decent statements. Before making a serious allegation that a senior political leader personally owned 700 auto-rickshaws, the administrator should have presented specific and reliable evidence, he added.
Making such comments without presenting acceptable evidence to the public was not responsible behaviour, Zubayer said.
He also said issues relating to auto-rickshaw operations, traffic congestion, road discipline and drivers’ livelihood concerns should be considered in light of reality and public interest.
According to him, any political party’s position on these issues should be challenged through arguments, facts and practical measures rather than unsubstantiated allegations against its leaders.
Zubayer called on the DNCC administrator to make specific and verifiable evidence supporting his remarks public. If he failed to do so, Jamaat demanded that he withdraw the statement and publicly express regret.
