Two journalists from the Daily Sun – Deputy Editor M Munir Hossain and Senior Staff Correspondent Rafikul Islam – were among seven media professionals honoured with the inaugural “Bangladesh Agro Industry Media Award-2025” on Saturday.
The accolades, introduced by the country’s leading agro-processing conglomerate PRAN Group, recognise outstanding reporting on Bangladesh’s vital agriculture and agro-processing sectors.
The Daily Sun duo secured their awards in the print media category, alongside Sukanta Halder of The Daily Star.
In the television category, honours went to Delowar Hossain Dolon (Channel 24) and Rakib Hossain (Ekattor TV), while Nazmul Hossain (Jagonews24.com) and Shariful Rukon (Ekusheypatrika.com) triumphed in the online category.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon presented the crests as chief guest at a gala ceremony held at the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) office in Gulshan.
National Press Club President Hasan Hafiz, PRAN Group Managing Director Eleash Mridha, and Marketing Director Kamruzzaman Kamal were also in attendance.
The winners were selected by a distinguished jury comprising Prof Robaet Ferdous of the University of Dhaka, Khurshid Ahmad Farhad of Bombay Sweets, and Mohammad Touhidul Islam of Transparency International Bangladesh.
Addressing the event, Minister Swapon highlighted agriculture’s critical role in driving GDP, employment, and economic stability.
Commending PRAN Group’s vision, he urged journalists to pursue deeper investigative reporting to unlock the sector’s potential. Eleash Mridha emphasised that with proper support, the agro-processing sector could emerge as Bangladesh’s next major export engine after ready-made garments, mirroring the success of ASEAN nations like Thailand and Vietnam.
“The objective of this award is to encourage evidence-based journalism that explores both the opportunities and challenges within the industry,” Eleash Mridha said, confirming that the initiative will become a regular fixture on the media calendar.
