Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Sunday directed the authorities concerned to expedite planning and construction of the Inner Circular Road around Dhaka to ease traffic congestion in the capital.
He gave the instruction while chairing a meeting at his office in the Bangladesh Secretariat to review progress on the project, said the PM’s Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu.
Proposed under the Revised Strategic Transport Plan (RSTP), the road will run for around 88.8km. It will stretch from Termukh Bridge at Uttarkhan through Dhour, Birulia, Gabtoli, Bosila, Hazaribagh, Sadarghat, Kadamtali, Tegharia, Postogola, Fatullah, Chashara and Shimrail to Demra. Another section will run via Purbachal and Beraid.
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) is building a 5km stretch from the Rayerbazar sluice gate to Loharpul in Lalbagh at a cost of Tk1,014 crore. DSCC sources said 50% of the work has been completed.
DSCC Superintendent Engineer Mithun Chandra Shill said the corporation briefed the prime minister on planning for the 7km stretch from Loharpul to Postogola Bridge.
“The Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) has prepared a feasibility study for the project. The Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) is vetting the study. We are also processing a development project proposal for the Local Government Division, with inputs from BUET experts,” he said.
He added that representatives of the Roads and Highways Department told the meeting about their planning progress on the Postogola-Shimrail and Rayerbazar-Abdullahpur sections.
According to the deputy press secretary, Tarique Rahman stressed the need to identify and remove existing obstacles at the earliest, ensure effective coordination among the agencies concerned and set a realistic timeframe for completion. He also asked the authorities to ensure visible progress on the project as soon as possible.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam, State Minister for LGRD and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, State Minister for Road Transport and Bridges and Railways Habibur Rashid, DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam and Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton, along with senior officials, attended the meeting.
