A team of young Bangladeshi students won the 13th edition of CERN’s Beamline for Schools (BL4S) competition for the first time.

The team was welcomed by the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh in Geneva, said a press release.

Bangladesh team Polaris secured this remarkable distinction alongside other winning teams from the United States, the United Kingdom, Türkiye and India.

Beamline for Schools (BL4S), one of the world’s most prestigious science competitions for school and college students, was competed by 712 teams from 89 countries this year.

The team comprised of students from colleges in Noakhali, Rangpur and Dhaka. During their interaction with the Permanent Mission, they shared their inspiring journey from pursuing scientific experiments with limited facilities to conducting the final experiment at the University of Bonn and CERN.

Their experiment focused on polysiloxane-based plastic scintillators for high-energy electron beam profiling, conducted at the ELSA accelerator of the University of Bonn.

Congratulating the students, Ambassador Nahida Sobhan praised their extraordinary achievement as a powerful demonstration of the talent, creativity and global potential of Bangladesh’s young generation.

The ambassador recalled how the Foundation of Bangladesh-CERN cooperation was laid in 2012, when the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh in Geneva concluded the signing of an Expression of Interest (EoI) between Bangladesh and CERN.

This was followed by an International Cooperation Agreement (ICA) in 2014. These initiatives opened new opportunities for Bangladeshi scientists, engineers, researchers and students to participate in CERN’s scientific and training programmes.

The success of these young students is a powerful reminder of Bangladesh’s greatest strength: its people and its youth.
