Branded watch - what to look for and where?
A A

Buying a branded watch is not always about its price or brand name. It is more about what kind of watch an individual prefers. And this preference comes from the type of watch movement he or she likes.

A watch movement—also known as a “caliber”—is the internal mechanism that powers a timepiece and ensures its functions operate correctly. It is essential for maintaining accurate time, and without it, a watch cannot function.

Watch movements are generally divided into three main categories: Quartz, Mechanical, and Automatic, along with hybrid systems such as Solar, Kinetic, and Mecha-Quartz.

Quartz Movements operate using a battery that sends an electric current through a quartz crystal, causing it to vibrate at a precise frequency. Known for high accuracy and affordability, quartz watches typically deviate only a few seconds per month. Popular brands include Casio, Credence, Tissot, and Longines.

Mechanical (Manual/Hand-Wound) Movements are the oldest form of watch mechanism. They require manual winding through the crown to power a mainspring. These watches are valued for their traditional craftsmanship and smooth sweeping second hand. Notable brands include Seiko, Citizen, and Tissot.

Automatic (Self-Winding) Movements are a type of mechanical system that uses the motion of the wearer’s wrist to wind the mainspring automatically. These watches do not require batteries or daily winding. Leading brands include Seiko, Citizen, Orient, Tissot, Rado, and Omega, while more affordable options are available from brands like Pagani Design, Fossil, and Credence.

Hybrid systems combine different technologies. Solar-powered watches use light to recharge batteries, with Citizen (Eco-Drive), Seiko, and Casio being major players. Kinetic movements generate power from wrist motion and are largely associated with Seiko. Mecha-Quartz combines quartz accuracy with mechanical chronograph functions, with Furlan Marri among the notable brands.

Experts say the key differences among these movements lie in accuracy, maintenance, and cost. Quartz watches are the most accurate and low-maintenance, while mechanical and automatic watches require servicing but are valued for craftsmanship. Hybrid models offer a balance between technology and convenience.

For this reason, experts recommend purchasing from authorized outlets with proper after-sales service. In Bangladesh, TIME ZONE is recognized as a trusted retailer offering genuine watches along with reliable after-sales support.
