The Old Dhaka Iftar Bazaar has made a vibrant comeback at the International Convention City Bashundhara (ICCB), serving a delectable spread of traditional Dhakai iftar delights from the very first day of Ramadan.
This year marks its tenth edition, as ICCB continues its decade-long tradition of bringing the iconic flavours of Old Dhaka to residents of the city’s newer neighbourhoods.
Designed as a comfortable alternative to the bustling streets of traditional markets, the bazaar lets fasting devotees savour classic and Shahi iftar delicacies in a fully air-conditioned, dust-free setting.
Organisers noted that the arrangement is especially convenient for those looking to avoid the traffic and heat of popular areas like Chawkbazar.
On Thursday, the first day of Ramadan, Hall 5 of ICCB buzzed with crowds as visitors explored some 30 stalls operated by different catering companies and food outlets.
Popular favourites, including Mughal and Shahi dishes, alongside fresh fruit juices, were offered at what vendors described as wallet-friendly prices.
Md Jasim Uddin, in-charge of the ICCB Heritage Restaurant, said the bazaar has introduced new features this year to enhance the visitor experience.
“We have added seating arrangements for visitors, which were absent in previous editions. Now, people can enjoy the traditional flavours of Old Dhaka without having to travel there,” he told the Daily Sun.
He emphasised that hygiene and quality control remain top priorities.
“Street food is often neither healthy nor hygienic. We uphold strict standards and have a dedicated team to monitor food quality,” he added.
Several regular participants have expanded their offerings this year.
Representing ICCB Heritage Restaurant, Mehedi Hossain Mollah said the outlet is highlighting Mughal and Shahi specialities.
“This is our fourth year participating. Alongside our popular dishes, we’ve introduced new items like mutton leg roast and kala bhuna,” he said.
Hamidur Rahman, who visited the bazaar with his wife, said the venue made their shopping much more convenient.
“We live in Bashundhara Residential Area, so we can easily hop on a rickshaw, pick up what we need, and be back home in no time,” he said.
Dhaka Catering Service showcased Old Dhaka favourites such as kachchi, tehari, jilapi, and halim.
Owner Kazi Jahangir Hossain said the business shifted from a restaurant to catering after the pandemic but continues to place food quality at the forefront.
The bazaar will be open daily from 3pm until iftar throughout Ramadan, running until the 27th of the holy month, organisers confirmed.
