Singapore has reaffirmed its commitment to multilateralism and expressed support for Khalilur Rahman, President of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), as he assumes office amid growing geopolitical uncertainty and global challenges.
Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said he had previously met Rahman in his capacity as Bangladesh’s foreign minister.
In a statement posted on his verified Facebook account early Tuesday (3 November), Balakrishnan said Rahman had taken office at a consequential time for the United Nations, with the world facing mounting geopolitical uncertainties and complex global challenges.
Singapore remains firmly committed to multilateralism and supports Rahman’s efforts to strengthen the effectiveness of the United Nations in delivering meaningful outcomes for its member states, he said.
Rahman’s presidency comes at a critical juncture for the international organisation, as it faces growing demands to address global challenges and enhance cooperation among member states.
