The Embassy of Algeria in Dhaka on Saturday commemorated the 65th anniversary of the Paris massacres of October 17, 1961, observed in Algeria as National Emigration Day.

The commemorative event was held at the embassy’s Chancery under the theme “From the Depths of Memory to the Horizons of the Future.”

The ceremony brought together dignitaries, business representatives from various sectors, academics, religious figures, Bangladeshi media representatives, Scouts, members of the diplomatic community and their families.

In his address, Ambassador of Algeria to Bangladesh Dr Abdelouahab Saidani recalled the tragic events of October 17, 1961, when peaceful Algerian demonstrators protesting a discriminatory curfew in France faced violent repression by the Paris police.

The crackdown resulted in numerous deaths and injuries, with some victims being thrown into or drowned in the River Seine.

The ambassador highlighted the historical significance of the massacres and their international repercussions in strengthening solidarity with Algeria’s struggle for self-determination.

He said the events continue to symbolise sacrifice, resilience and human dignity, while underscoring the vital contribution of the Algerian diaspora to the country’s national liberation and development.

The commemoration concluded with the screening of a documentary on the Algerian Muslim Scouts and their contribution to the national liberation struggle.

The documentary highlighted the Scouts’ role in fostering patriotic consciousness, mobilising young people and promoting values of solidarity, discipline, civic responsibility and devotion to the homeland.

It also paid tribute to the contributions of different sections of Algerian society to the struggle for independence and the preservation of national identity.
