A high-level European Union delegation met Prime Minister’s Adviser and Prime Minister’s Office spokesperson Mahdi Amin in Dhaka on Monday to discuss ensuring safe, orderly and legal labour migration from Bangladesh to EU countries.
The meeting, held at the Prime Minister’s Office in
Tejgaon, was led by European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration
Magnus Brunner. Discussions focused on preventing irregular migration and human
trafficking, expanding employment opportunities for skilled Bangladeshi workers
in Europe, and ensuring transparency and accountability in recruitment and visa
procedures.
During the meeting, the participants emphasised the
need for greater transparency in visa processing. They discussed introducing QR
codes on educational certificates, bank statements and other financial
documents to prevent fraud and improve the credibility of submitted documents.
They also exchanged views on facilitating
remittances through legal channels for Bangladeshis living in European
countries and creating new employment opportunities for properly trained and
skilled Bangladeshi workers in the European labour market.
Brunner said around 500,000 Bangladeshis were
currently living legally in different EU countries. He said the European Union
was ready to provide all kinds of support to ensure legal migration while
combating irregular migration and human trafficking.
Mahdi Amin said Bangladesh had returned to the
democratic path with the formation of a government elected through direct
public voting after a long period.
He added that the government, under the leadership
of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, was committed to ensuring orderly, safe and
legal migration.
