India has invited Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to visit the country on a bilateral trip and attend the outreach session of the upcoming BRICS summit, scheduled to be held in September.

Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal disclosed the matter at the ministry’s weekly briefing on Tuesday.

He said, “India had formally invited Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to visit India soon after the new government took office in Bangladesh. He was also invited to attend the outreach session of the 18th BRICS Summit in India in September in his capacity as the current chair of the regional grouping BIMSTEC.”

The spokesperson said the recent meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka was positive and constructive. They discussed various aspects of bilateral relations and issues of mutual interest, he said.

“Regular communication and high-level dialogue are continuing to advance relations between Bangladesh and India,” Jaiswal said.

The 18th BRICS Summit will be hosted by India on 12 and 13 September.

As per BRICS tradition, heads of government of countries chairing regional groupings are invited to the outreach session of the summit. In line with the practice, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has been invited as the current chair of BIMSTEC.
