State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, MP, left for Singapore on Sunday on a four-day official visit, marking the first overseas visit by a member of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s Cabinet since the government took office in February 2026.
During her visit from 9 to 12 August, the state minister will hold bilateral meetings with Singaporean Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Zulkarnian Bin Abdul Rahim and Minister of State for Manpower Dinesh Vasu Dash.
She will also visit major infrastructure facilities, including PSA International, a global leader in port management, and the TuasOne Waste-to-Energy Plant, one of Singapore’s most advanced waste-to-energy facilities.
Singapore is home to around 150,000 Bangladeshi nationals whose remittances play a crucial role in Bangladesh’s economy. To honour their contributions, the daily Bonik Barta will host the “Remitters Recognition 2026” programme in Singapore, where Shama Obaed Islam will attend as the chief guest.
Officials expect this first high-level visit from the new administration to give fresh momentum to Bangladesh-Singapore bilateral relations, particularly by strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, port and logistics, technology, manpower and sustainable development.
