Bangladesh has won unanimous election to the Executive Committee (ExCo) of the Commonwealth Board of Governors for the 2026-28 term, marking another milestone in the country’s engagement with the Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth Executive Committee consists of 16 members, including eight highest-contributing member states and eight elected members representing four regional groups.

Bangladesh secured election from the Asia-Europe region during the Commonwealth Board of Governors meeting held on 20 May 2026 at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London.

Acting High Commissioner Dr Nazrul Islam represented Bangladesh at the meeting.

The Executive Committee oversees financial, personnel and administrative matters of the Commonwealth Secretariat and provides policy recommendations to the Commonwealth Board of Governors.

The committee also reviews applications of new and accredited organisations seeking Commonwealth recognition.

Officials said Bangladesh’s unanimous election reflects the country’s active participation, sustained contributions and growing leadership role within the Commonwealth.

Bangladesh joined the Commonwealth shortly after independence, becoming one of the organisation’s earliest international partners following the country’s emergence as a sovereign nation.
