The High Commission of Canada in Bangladesh has reaffirmed Canada’s continued support for United Nations initiatives in Bangladesh, including assistance aimed at supporting the successful holding of the 2026 parliamentary elections.
In a post shared on its
official Facebook page, the High Commission said Canadian High Commissioner
Ajit Singh held a meeting with Carol Flore-Smereczniak to discuss the
longstanding partnership between Canada and the United Nations in Bangladesh.
The post said Canada is
proud to be a leading contributor to the UN’s work worldwide, including in
Bangladesh, where it supports different UN agencies involved in critical
initiatives.
During the meeting,
High Commissioner Singh also highlighted Canada’s sustained leadership in
responding to the Rohingya crisis and supporting host communities since 2017.
According to the High
Commission, Canada has so far provided more than $600 million in assistance for
the Rohingya response. The support includes a recent announcement of an
additional $10 million in funding for operations run by the United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration in
Cox’s Bazar.
The High Commission
thanked the UN official for the “engaging discussion” and expressed hope for
closer cooperation in building “a better future that leaves no one behind.”
