Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has announced an updated vision for the country’s “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” initiative during an official visit to Hanoi, Vietnam.
In a foreign policy address on Saturday (2 May), Takaichi outlined three priority areas under the revised FOIP framework aimed at strengthening regional cooperation and stability.
The first pillar focuses on building economic infrastructure suited to the age of artificial intelligence and data, including efforts to enhance supply chain resilience for energy and critical materials.
The second emphasises the co-creation of economic growth opportunities through closer public-private collaboration and the sharing of rules and standards among partner countries.
The third priority seeks to deepen cooperation in the field of security, with the objective of ensuring peace and stability across the Indo-Pacific region.
The updated FOIP strategy reflects Japan’s continued commitment to promoting a rules-based international order, economic resilience, and regional security amid evolving global challenges.
