Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep condolences to BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman following the death of his mother, former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.
In a condolence message dated 30 December 2025, and shared by the High Commission of India in Dhaka on its verified Facebook page on Wednesday, Prime Minister Modi said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia and conveyed his heartfelt sympathy to Tarique Rahman and the bereaved family.
Recalling his meeting with Khaleda Zia in Dhaka in June 2015, Modi described her as a rare leader of strong conviction and ideals who earned the distinction of becoming Bangladesh’s first woman prime minister. He acknowledged her significant contribution to Bangladesh’s development and to strengthening India–Bangladesh relations.
The Indian prime minister noted that although her passing has created an irreplaceable void, her ideals and political legacy would endure. He expressed confidence that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party would carry forward those ideals under Tarique Rahman’s capable leadership, helping chart a new course while further enriching the deep and historic partnership between India and Bangladesh.
Modi also extended his sympathies to the people of Bangladesh in this time of national mourning, praising their historic resilience, dignity and commitment to shared values and democratic traditions. He expressed hope that the nation would continue to move forward on a path of peace and harmony guided by national unity.
Concluding his message, the Indian prime minister prayed for strength and patience for Tarique Rahman and his family to overcome the loss and conveyed his best wishes for Tarique Rahman’s future endeavours.
Begum Khaleda Zia passed away in Dhaka on early Tuesday at the age of 80.
