Shwapno, one of the country’s largest retail chains, has taken the initiative to support two young sisters, Israt and Roza Moni, who were left vulnerable after their mother allegedly abandoned them in Cumilla.
To help secure a sustainable livelihood for their family, the company has decided to gift them a cow. Through this initiative, Shwapno aims to help the family establish a sustainable source of income, according to a press release.
On 11 October, local residents found five-year-old Israt and her one-and-a-half-year-old sister, Moni, crying alone beside a road near Rose Garden Model School in Dakshin Bazar of Brahmanpara upazila.
According to Israt, their mother had brought them there on the pretext of buying them chips and then left them alone. After waiting for a long time, the two children found themselves in a distressing and helpless situation.
Later, the identities of the children were established through photographs and videos circulated on social media. Upon learning about the incident, one of their paternal aunts arrived at the scene and took the children into her care with assistance from local residents.
After learning about the children’s circumstances, Shwapno decided to extend support to their family. The cow is expected to enable the family to generate a regular income through livestock rearing and milk sales. The initiative is also expected to contribute to the children’s upbringing and help create a more secure future for them.
Shwapno believes that standing beside vulnerable members of society and creating opportunities for them to become self-reliant are important aspects of corporate social responsibility, alongside its business operations, read the release.
The company also recognises the importance of supporting families to help ensure a safe and secure future for children. Through this initiative for Israt and Roza Moni, Shwapno hopes to bring a positive and lasting change to the family’s livelihood.
