The vessel MV Calypso N, carrying 58,457 tonnes of wheat from the United States, has arrived at the outer anchorage of Mongla Port under Cash Purchase Contract No G to G-03, in line with the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the governments of the United States and Bangladesh.
Bangladesh has already begun importing wheat from the US on a government-to-government (G-to-G) basis. All wheat imported under the G-to-G-01 and G-to-G-02 agreements has already arrived in the country, according to the Ministry of Food.
Under G-to-G-01, a total of 237,845 tonnes of wheat was imported, while 230,039 tonnes arrived under G-to-G-02, bringing the total to 467,884 tonnes.
The country’s total annual wheat demand is around seven million tonnes, while domestic production stands at about one million tonnes. To meet the remaining demand, wheat is imported from abroad by both the government and the private sector.
Sampling and testing of the wheat aboard the vessel have already been completed, and necessary arrangements have been made to unload the cargo swiftly.
