The stock market staged a strong rally on Sunday -- the first trading day after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured victory in the 13th national election -- driven by renewed investor optimism and expectations surrounding the new government.
The benchmark DSEX of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) surged by 200 points, while total turnover climbed to Tk1,275 crore.
Market insiders described the rally as a natural progression, noting that both the index and turnover had already been trending upwards ahead of the 12 February election.
Fresh funds flowed particularly into companies perceived to be aligned with the BNP. Trading was heavily concentrated in low-priced stocks, which recorded the highest demand on Sunday and significantly fuelled the overall upswing.
DSE Director Md Shakil Rizvi said the peaceful conduct of the election helped restore investor confidence. “Investors’ expectations regarding the market are rising, and this is being reflected in trading,” he said.
He expressed hope that the positive trend would continue in the coming days. However, he stressed that sustaining the momentum would require the swift listing of quality companies. He also called for investment-friendly policies, robust initial public offerings (IPOs), stronger market governance, and firm measures to curb bank-related irregularities.

Market observers said investors returned to buying amid a stable post-election environment and expectations of clear policy direction from the new administration. In the run-up to the polls, the market had remained subdued due to uncertainty, liquidity pressures, and weak confidence, prompting many investors to stay on the sidelines. Following the announcement of the results, they began re-entering the market with fresh positions.
Consequently, both turnover and indices recorded notable gains. Strong buying pressure was evident in banking, financial institution, insurance, and large-cap stocks from the outset. The DSEX rose more than 130 points at the opening and maintained its upward momentum throughout the session. The rally intensified towards the close, ending the day with a sharp surge.
By the close, shares and units of 364 companies advanced on the DSE, while 26 declined and four remained unchanged.
The DSEX settled at 5,600 points, marking the first single-day rise of 200 points since 8 August 2024, when the index had jumped 306 points following the fall of the Awami-led government on 5 August.
Among other indices, the DSE Shariah Index gained 30 points to 1,127, while the DS30 index -- comprising 30 selected blue-chip companies -- rose 86 points to 2,145.

Turnover on the DSE also increased significantly. Total transactions amounted to Tk1,275 crore, up from Tk790 crore in the previous session—an increase of Tk484 crore.
City Bank topped the turnover chart with shares worth Tk80 crore traded. Dhaka Bank followed with Tk42 crore, while Square Pharmaceuticals ranked third with transactions worth Tk41 crore.
The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) also witnessed a strong rally, with its main indices posting substantial gains.
At the CSE, the CSCX index advanced 283.83 points to 9,555. The overall CASPI index rose 484.37 points to 15,518, the Shariah index gained 19.19 points to 938, and the CSE 30 index climbed 496.41 points to 14,064.
Total turnover at the CSE stood at Tk24 crore, compared with Tk9 crore in the previous session.
