To preserve ecological balance, mitigate lightning strike casualties, and combat natural calamities, the Pirgachha upazila unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho carried out a palm seed-sowing drive in Rangpur on Sunday afternoon.
The drive was conducted along the roadside connecting Amtoli
Bazar and Satdarga Bazar under the initiative of the organisation’s Pirgachha
unit.
Volunteers highlighted that the palmyra palm is an enduring
natural feature in Bangladesh, playing an indispensable role in maintaining
ecological equilibrium, preserving biodiversity, and reducing disaster damage.
In particular, planting palmyra palms is considered an
effective, natural defence against fatal lightning strikes. Furthermore, the
deep root network helps arrest soil erosion, while the tree supports rural wildlife
habitats.
Amid depleting greenery and accelerating environmental
degradation, tree plantation initiatives have grown increasingly urgent.
Although palmyra palms mature slowly, their multi-decade longevity ensures that planting seeds today builds sustainable natural shields for future generations.
Bashundhara Shuvosangho Pirgachha unit President Md Nahid
Hasan, Vice-President Badhon Miah, General Secretary Md Mehedi Hasan Maruf,
Organising Secretary Md Alif Miah, and Publicity Secretary Md Liton Miah
attended the programme alongside executive members and local residents.
Members noted that environmental protection requires
consistent post-plantation care and monitoring until saplings take root, urging
active community participation to safeguard the seedlings. Organisers expressed
hope that the campaign would inspire rural communities to plant more native
species and build an eco-friendly society.
