Aiming to curb the rise of juvenile delinquency and prevent teenage gangs, the Harirampur upazila unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised an awareness meeting with students at Shirin Ali Chowdhury High School in Harirampur, Manikganj on Thursday.

The meeting was presided over by the Harirampur upazila unit Shuvosangho President Sajib Guha Majumdar and moderated by General Secretary Sayem Khan. Teachers and students of the school, and local officials of the organisation were also present at the event.

Speakers at the event identified negative peer pressure, substance abuse, broken family communication, and the misuse of social media as key drivers pushing adolescents towards crime.

They cautioned that petty delinquent acts often escalate into serious offences, including extortion, violent clashes, mugging, narcotics trafficking, and the possession of illicit arms, urging pupils to choose wholesome companions and commit themselves to sports and creative pursuits.

Addressing the session, schoolteacher Sujit Kumar Sarkar stressed the joint role of families and institutions in shaping youth character, urging mentors to build friendly bonds with students alongside regular guidance to deter delinquency.

Echoing him, Sayem Khan noted that law enforcement alone cannot curb teen gangs without early social awareness, urging classmates to help counsel and reintegrate wayward peers rather than alienating them.

Concluding the meeting, unit President Sajib Guha Majumdar remarked that teenagers' potential must be steered constructively into studies, sports, and creative pursuits to keep them away from street crime.
