Twenty disadvantaged women in Gouripur have received sewing machines after completing a three-month sewing training programme, opening up opportunities for them to earn from home and support their families.

The sewing machines were distributed along with saplings at a programme held recently at the Gouripur Press Club auditorium, with Bashundhara Group providing the machines through Bashundhara Shuvosangho.

For Mariam Akter Ria, the initiative has opened a new path towards achieving her dream of continuing her education while helping her family.

Ria, an Alim student at a local madrasa in Gouripur, comes from a farming family. Her father is a farmer and her mother is a homemaker. With the family struggling to meet its expenses on the limited income from farming, Ria wanted to contribute while continuing her studies.

After completing the three-month sewing training, she received a sewing machine as a gift from Bashundhara Group. She now plans to earn by sewing alongside her studies and help share her family’s financial responsibilities.

Kakoli Rani Das, another beneficiary, has faced a longer struggle. Her parents are no longer alive, and most of her five siblings are unemployed.

The sewing machine she received will allow her to work from home and earn an income to help meet her family’s needs.

Though Mariam and Kakoli have different stories, they share the same aspiration — to overcome poverty and build their futures through their own efforts.

Popular writer, Bashundhara Group Adviser and Bashundhara Shuvosangho chief Imdadul Haq Milan attended the programme as the chief guest. The event was conducted by Selim Al Raj and chaired by Shankar Ghosh Pilu.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Gouripur Circle) Debashish Karmakar, Gouripur Women’s Degree College Principal Dr Md Harunur Rashid, Gouripur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Habibur Rahman, Gouripur municipality BNP convenor Ali Akbar Anis, Gouripur Press Club President Beg Faruk Ahmed, Press Club General Secretary Rakibul Islam, former president Kazi Abdullah Al Aman, former convener Rais Uddin, Nandail Additional Agriculture Officer Kamrul Hasan Kamu and Gouripur Writers’ Association General Secretary Palash Azhar were among others present.

Habibur Rahman said the initiative was timely and would help disadvantaged women become self-reliant.

“A sewing machine can become a means of self-reliance for a woman. It enables her to earn from home and contribute to improving her family’s financial condition,” he said.

Debashish Karmakar said the initiative was commendable and would give the beneficiaries an opportunity to stand on their own feet, support their families and build a better future.

He said providing sewing machines after training had made the initiative more meaningful.

Imdadul Haq Milan said the initiative was not merely about handing over sewing machines but creating opportunities for women from disadvantaged families to become self-reliant.

“With training and employment opportunities, a woman can earn for her family and play an important role in society and the country,” he said.

He said Bashundhara Shuvosangho promotes humanitarian values and encourages people to stand beside those in need.
