Bashundhara Shuvosangho has provided free medicines for controlling and curing blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, fever and cold afflictions to elderly citizens at Meherunnesa Old Home in the Chhoto Sohagi (Phulbari) area of Gobindaganj Upazila, Gaibandha.

Various essential medicines for other common health needs, vitamins, and oral saline were also distributed to mark International Day of Older Persons.

The event was not limited to distributing medicines; it also provided an opportunity to spend some time with the elderly residents. After a long time, many of the residents smiled with relief as people came to check on them with the warmth and care of family members.

Sixty-eight-year-old resident Purnima Rani expressed her love and gratitude. She said, “The boys and girls of Bashundhara Shuvosangho regularly come to check on us. We sincerely pray for them.”

Purnima Rani’s words reflected the true significance of the initiative. For elderly people, what they need is not only medicine, but also a little time, companionship, and the feeling that someone cares for them like a family member.

Bashundhara Shuvosangho’s initiative once again highlighted that elderly people are not a burden; they are living chapters of our society’s experience, history, and love.

Speaking as the chief guest, Rafiqul Islam, general secretary of the Phulbari Union BNP, said, “Elderly people are an important part of our society and families. They have contributed to the country and society for a long time. Ensuring their health, safety, and comfortable lives is a humanitarian responsibility of us all.”

He thanked Bashundhara Shuvosangho for taking initiatives to ensure regular health checkups, provide necessary medicines, and strengthen emotional connections with elderly people.

Mohammad Apel Mahmud, founding director of Meherunnesa Old Age Home, said, “I would like to thank Bashundhara Shuvosangho for taking such a humanitarian initiative. If a doctor from the Upazila Health Complex could visit the home at least twice a month to conduct health checkups for the elderly, they would benefit greatly.”

Also present were Humayun Ahmed Biplob, adviser to the Gaibandha district branch of Bashundhara Shuvosangho; Nur Alam Mia Nur, president of the Sundarganj Upazila branch; the branch’s General Secretary Aminul Islam Akash; Gobindaganj Upazila branch President Atik Hasan Jibon; Vice President Rimi Akter; Assistant General Secretary Zerin Akter; and more.
