Bashundhara Shuvosangho is conducting sewing training
programs in Ruma upazila of Bandarban with the aim of making women in the hill
communities self-reliant and enhancing their economic capacity.
After completing the training, the hill women will receive
sewing machines free of cost from Bashundhara Shuvosangho.
At the sewing training center, participants are receiving
hands-on training in making various types of clothing, fabric cutting, taking
measurements, operating sewing machines, garment designing and other necessary technical
skills. The trainees are gradually becoming proficient in sewing through
regular practice.
According to the trainees, “The opportunity to learn a
practical and income-generating skill like sewing is extremely important for
us. After completing the training, we will be able to make clothes ourselves.
It will also create opportunities to take up local sewing work, start
small-scale sewing businesses or contribute financially to our families.”
Many women in the hill areas play important roles in their
families and communities despite facing various challenges. However, their
opportunities to utilize their skills are often limited due to a lack of
adequate opportunities and training. In such a situation, initiatives like
sewing training can boost women’s confidence and create new avenues for
employment, those concerned said.
Angshahla Marma, president of the Ruma upazila branch of Bashundhara Shuvosangho, said, “Empowering women with skills means creating an opportunity for an entire family to become self-reliant. We want women in the hill areas to be able to earn by utilizing their skills and become self-reliant. Sewing training will make their journey toward that goal easier.”
