Bashundhara Tissue and Bashundhara Shuvosangho have jointly organised a tree plantation and sapling distribution programme at Shiberdanga High School in Rajibpur upazila of Kurigram, aiming to build a greener future.

The initiative, titled “A beautiful tomorrow in green”, highlighted the importance of tree plantation in protecting the environment, tackling the adverse impacts of climate change and expanding greenery across the country.

Speakers at the programme said trees not only maintain environmental balance but also support healthy living, preserve biodiversity and help create a liveable planet for future generations.

Rajibpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (acting) Sayekul Hasan Khan attended the event as the chief guest. He praised initiatives by organisations such as Bashundhara Tissue and Bashundhara Shuvosangho alongside government efforts.

“Receiving saplings is not enough; students must take proper care of the trees. Only then will they enjoy the benefits in the future,” he said.

Special guest and Rajibpur upazila BNP convener Prof Mokhlesur Rahman said tree plantation has no alternative to protecting environmental balance and building a green Bangladesh.

He said the state has long prioritised tree plantation, and initiatives like those by Bashundhara Tissue and Bashundhara Shuvosangho will further strengthen the country’s ongoing efforts towards greenery.

Rajibpur Sub-Registrar Pradip Kumar Biswas said a country needs forests covering 25 to 30% of its total land area to maintain environmental and climatic balance. However, Bangladesh has less forest coverage than required, while deforestation and indiscriminate tree cutting continue to increase climate-related challenges.

He urged every student to plant at least one tree and ensure its proper care.

Rajibpur Upazila Academic Supervisor Golam Kibria said government and social organisations aim to involve future generations in environmental conservation through tree plantation programmes. He said such initiatives play an important role in raising environmental awareness among students.

Shiberdanga High School Head Teacher Idris Ali, Rajibpur Upazila Bashundhara Shuvosangho members Arif Mahmud, Rashedul, Masud Rana, Osman, Ashik and Mamun, members of Rajibpur Government College Bashundhara Shuvosangho, teachers, students, guardians and members of the school management committee attended the programme.
