A tree plantation and sapling distribution programme was held at Gopalganj Science and Technology University (GSTU) on Wednesday to help address the adverse impacts of global warming and climate change.

The university unit of Bashundhara Shuvosangho organised the programme as part of a nationwide tree plantation campaign launched jointly by Bashundhara Tissue and Shuvosangho to mark the 25th anniversary of Bashundhara Tissue.

The event began at 10am on the university campus, where saplings of timber, fruit-bearing, medicinal and ornamental trees were planted and distributed among participants.

The programme was inaugurated with the planting of a neem sapling in front of the university's Ekushey Library building.

Among the guests were Simon Rahman Tanvi, assistant professor of the Department of Sociology, and Md Saiful Islam, lecturer of the Department of International Relations and provost of Titumir Hall.

Speaking on the occasion, lecturer Saiful Islam said environmental balance is being disrupted due to a shortage of oxygen and rising global temperatures.

He stressed the need for extensive tree plantation efforts at both institutional and individual levels to ensure a safer future for coming generations.

Rezwanul Islam, general secretary of the GSTU unit of Shuvosangho, said indiscriminate felling of trees is damaging environmental balance and accelerating the greenhouse effect.

"At a time when environmental protection has become increasingly important, this initiative by Bashundhara Tissue and Shuvosangho is both timely and necessary," he said.

Among others present were Turza Rahman, general secretary of the Gopalganj district unit of Shuvosangho; joint general secretaries Tipu Biswas and Rajib Molla; women's affairs secretary Tusi Akter, executive member Simanta Pal, GSTU unit joint general secretary Atikur Rahman, youth affairs secretary Fahim Faisal, organising secretary Ehsanul Karim, environment affairs secretary Suman Baidya, sports secretary Ramiz Mridha, and information technology secretary Rumman Molla.
