Bashundhara Tissue and Bashundhara Shuvosangho jointly distributed saplings among school students in Chuadanga on Monday as part of an initiative to promote environmental conservation and build a greener future.
The programme, held at Rahela Khatun Girls’ Academy in the town at 11:00am, saw students receiving a variety of fruit-bearing, forest and medicinal plant saplings. Guests and students also planted trees on the school premises.
The event was chaired by Advocate A S M Abdur Rouf, President of the Bashundhara Shuvosangho Chuadanga district branch. Administrator of Chuadanga Zila Parishad Sharifuzzaman attended as the chief guest.
Special guests included Additional Deputy Commissioner Nayan Kumar Rajbangshi, Chuadanga Press Club President Nazmul Haque Swapan, Chuadanga District Press Club General Secretary Kamruzzaman Selim, District Shop Owners’ Association President Manjurul Alam Malik Large, General Secretary Suman Parvez Khan, Treasurer Palash Kumar Saha, District JASAS General Secretary Selimul Habib, and Head Teacher of Rahela Khatun Girls’ Academy Habibur Rahman, among others.
The programme was conducted by Hemanta Kumar Singha Roy, General Secretary of the Bashundhara Shuvosangho Chuadanga district branch. Also present were adviser Jaman Akhtar, Jisan Ahmed, Office Secretary Sheikh Liton, Publicity and Publications Secretary Shamsuzzoha Rana, Planning and Implementation Secretary Sakib Biswas, Sports Secretary Salman Farsi and member Nafis Ahmed.
Addressing the event, Sharifuzzaman said climate change, rising temperatures, air pollution and environmental imbalance had become major global concerns, with Bangladesh also facing similar challenges.
“Due to indiscriminate tree felling and unplanned urbanisation, green spaces are shrinking, particularly in urban areas. In such a context, the initiative of Bashundhara Shuvosangho to place saplings in the hands of students is both timely and commendable,” he said.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Nayan Kumar Rajbangshi said trees not only enhance environmental beauty but also play a crucial role in sustaining human life.
“Trees absorb carbon dioxide, provide oxygen, prevent soil erosion, help preserve biodiversity and regulate temperature. Every individual should plant at least one tree and take responsibility for its care,” he said, expressing hope that such initiatives would spread across the country.
Students of Rahela Khatun Girls’ Academy expressed their enthusiasm after receiving the saplings, saying they would plant them in their home gardens or on vacant land within their educational institution and ensure proper care.
Guests and students later planted saplings on the school campus as part of the programme.
