Garment workers in Mirpur took to the streets again on Sunday, demanding that the minimum monthly wage be raised to Tk30,000, blocking roads at Mirpur-10 roundabout and causing severe traffic congestion.

Continuing their protests over the past several days, workers from different garment factories gathered at the Mirpur-10 roundabout around 9:00am and blocked the roads.

As a result, vehicular movement through the important intersection came to a halt, prompting the Mirpur Traffic Division to arrange diversions to ease congestion.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) of the Mirpur Traffic Division Abul Basar Mollah confirmed the development.

He said garment workers had blocked the roads again on Sunday, disrupting traffic movement through Mirpur-10.

"We are trying to keep traffic moving by arranging diversions," he said.

Earlier, garment workers blocked several roads in Mirpur on Thursday and Saturday, demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk30,000. On both days, they staged demonstrations on the roads for around five hours.

After Saturday's blockade, some protesting workers vandalised several garment factories and shopping malls.

The fresh blockade on Sunday morning, a day after the vandalism, again disrupted traffic movement in the Mirpur-10 area.
