Security guards at Bashundhara Residential Area in the capital have caught six suspected thieves red-handed while allegedly attempting to steal construction rods, handing them over to police after filing a general diary (GD) with Vatara Police Station on Tuesday.
The suspects were detained at Gate No. 6 around 1:30am on Tuesday after security personnel identified the group’s vehicle following an earlier theft at a construction project in the area.
According to the GD, six members of an organised theft gang allegedly stole a large quantity of construction rods from N Block in Bashundhara Residential Area on the night of 8 October.
Following the incident, security personnel reviewed CCTV footage from the surrounding area and identified the vehicle used in the theft, along with the suspected thieves. The vehicle’s registration number was then circulated among security guards at all gates of the residential area to help track down the suspects.
When the group allegedly returned on Monday night to commit another theft, guards on duty at Gate No. 6 intercepted them with a cement-laden truck and detained them.
The GD also stated that the suspects had allegedly been involved in several major thefts at different locations and construction sites in the residential area over an extended period. Information obtained during questioning helped investigators uncover details of other theft incidents, according to the GD.
The suspects were handed over to Vatara Police Station on the instructions of the authorities concerned.
The security guards’ actions have drawn praise from local residents, with several people thanking them on social media for their vigilance and prompt response.
On Tuesday, a resident named MD Rakib wrote on Facebook that rods had been stolen from his uncle’s project on 8 October. He praised the guards for catching the suspects and demonstrating dedication and responsibility.
Other Facebook users also commended the security personnel for their honesty and efforts to maintain safety in the area.
In a separate incident on 22 September, security guards in Bashundhara Residential Area detained three suspected members of a motorcycle theft gang and handed them, along with the recovered evidence, over to Vatara Police Station for legal action.
Earlier, in August, security personnel detained a man named Golam Rafi Khan within 36 hours of a reported mugging in the area.
According to sources concerned, a woman had her bag and mobile phone snatched while walking in Bashundhara. Security personnel reviewed CCTV footage, identified a suspect and collected an image of the motorcycle he used. Following his detention, Khan reportedly confessed to the incident and claimed that he used yaba. He was later handed over to police for legal action.
