Major fire erupts at building in Chawkbazar

A fire broke out at a shop in a building in Chawkbazar area of Old Dhaka on Monday afternoon.

The Fire Service has deployed ten units to the scene, said Duty Officer Rashed Bin Khalid.

The fire erupted at 5:02pm at a shop on the fifth floor of a six-story building, and the first units reached the spot 20 minutes later, Rashed told reporters.

The building, Manzur Khan Plaza, is located beside the AC Mosque at Chhoto Katra in Chawkbazar, he added.

Initially, five units were deployed and the situation was brought under tolerable limits, Khalid said. However, afterwards, the fire spread to a nearby building, requiring the deployment of additional units, he said.

The site of fire and nearby areas are engulfed with thick smoke, making it difficult to continue fire response measures, the duty officer said.

The reason behind the fire, and potential losses have yet to be determined, he said.
