A Dhaka court on Monday showed former state minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Dipankar Talukdar arrested in a fresh case filed with Paltan Model Police Station over an attack on a BNP procession in 2023.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jasita Islam
passed the order following a petition filed by police, said state prosecutor
Samsuddoha Sumon.
Earlier in the day, Sub-Inspector Md Nazmul Hossain produced
the accused before the court and sought his detention.
According to the case statement, the complainant, Md Bellal,
alleged that a group of Awami League leaders and activists, armed with local
weapons, attacked a BNP procession in the capital on 28 October 2023.
The case also alleged that he was beaten and injured with sharp weapons and sustained a serious injury to his forehead after being hit by a rubber bullet.
Police said Dipankar Talukdar, who is currently in jail in
another case, was allegedly involved in the incident along with other accused
and leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations.
Police sought to have him shown arrested in the case, saying
it was necessary for a proper investigation and to ensure justice. They also
said further remand could be sought if necessary for the investigation.
