Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel, assisted by local residents, foiled an attempt to push six people from India into Bangladesh through the Rangmahal border in Meherpur’s Gangni upazila on Sunday morning.
The group comprised four women and two men. It was the second reported push-in attempt in the same upazila within two days.
The incident occurred near border pillar 137 at around 6:00am on 11 October, according to a press release issued by the commander of Kushtia Battalion (47 BGB) around noon.
The release said Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, led by Himmat Singh, commander of the Dighalkandi BSF camp, attempted to bring the six people across the border.
A patrol team from the Rangmahal BGB camp, assisted by local residents, moved to prevent the crossing after detecting the attempt, the release said.
Faced with resistance from BGB personnel and residents, the BSF personnel abandoned the attempt and took the six individuals back into Indian territory at around 8:00am.
Lieutenant Colonel Rashed Kamal Roni, commander of Kushtia Battalion (47 BGB), said the force maintained a firm stance along the border and would not accept push-ins. He also urged residents of border areas to remain vigilant.
Two days earlier, the BSF had reportedly attempted to push four people into Bangladesh through the Sheoratala border in the same upazila. The group included a man, a woman and a child, according to the report.
