Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Asadul Habib Dulu on Friday said martyr Abu Sayed’s sacrifice had laid the foundation for building a democratic Bangladesh, as he laid the foundation stone for the Shaheed Abu Sayed Gate at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur on October 9.
Speaking as the chief guest at the ceremony on Friday afternoon, the minister said the patriotic democratic nationalist government was committed to making the most of the opportunity created through the sacrifices of hundreds of martyrs to establish equality, freedom and social justice in the country.
Dulu described Abu Sayed as a pioneer of the democratic movement, saying his sacrifice had spread across the country like a spark, ultimately leading to the fall of the autocracy that had long weighed on the nation.
He said initiatives to preserve Abu Sayed’s memory would help future generations learn about his sacrifice.
Welcoming the initiative to construct the Shaheed Abu Sayed Gate at the entrance to Begum Rokeya University, the minister said people passing through the gate would be able to feel and appreciate Abu Sayed’s legacy.
Bangladesh University Grants Commission member Professor Dr Abdullah Al-Mamun, Begum Rokeya University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Shaukat Ali, students, teachers, journalists and political leaders attended the ceremony.
Later, the minister attended a memorial meeting at Rangpur Shilpakala Academy marking the first death anniversary of Anisur Rahman Laku, the late member secretary of Rangpur district BNP.
