Power production at all the units of Barapukuria Thermal Power Plant in Dinajpur has been halted due to a fire incident and other technical glitches.
The fire originated from a short circuit at the
power line of I&C section of the plant’s unit-1 at 5:10am on Tuesday.
Due to the short circuit, the active unit-3 with
275MW capacity suddenly stopped after an immediate “trip”, halting the overall
power generation of the entire power plant, Chief Engineer of the plant Md Abu
Bakkar Siddik confirmed.
“Efforts are on to go back to power generation
quickly,” he said.
Power generation at the unit-2 of the plant has been
discontinued since 2020 due to technical issues.
According to plant sources, the unit-1 with 125MW
capacity and the unit-3 with 275MW capacity had been operational recently.
From these units, 65MW of power from unit-1 and
170MW of power from unit-3 was being added to the national grid until the
closure of the plant.
