A murder accused, Shariful Islam, removed his handcuffs
through “clever tricks” and fled the courtroom on Tuesday noon, his second successful
escape from a Dhaka court in just about 15 months.
Abdul Alim, the constable in-charge of securing Shariful,
has been suspended, and a three-member probe committee has been formed to
investigate how the same murder accused could flee police custody for the
second time.
Shariful, accused in multiple lawsuits including a 2018 murder case, escaped from the courtroom of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam around 12pm on Tuesday, confirmed Mohiuddin Mahmud Sohel, deputy commissioner at the Prosecution Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
He was brought before the court in a case filed over his
2025 escape from police custody, Mohiuddin said.
“A case will be filed over the second escape and an investigation
will be conducted,” the police officer added.
Police have beefed up presence in the court area and have
launched a drive to re-arrest the suspect, he added.
He fled police custody for the second time from inside the
courtroom while the judge was on the bench, Mohiuddin Sohel said, adding that
Shariful had been produced before the court on the scheduled date of another
case.
“After he was brought before the court, one of our police
members may have become slightly inattentive. Taking advantage of this, he
removed his handcuffs and fled from the court,” he said.
Shariful Islam is the son of deceased Shafique Ahmed of
Haripur village under Nawabganj Police Station in Dinajpur.
According to police and court sources, Shariful escaped
police custody for the first time on 19 June 2025 after biting the hand of one
of the policemen tasked with securing him.
He bit the policeman when he was being brought back to the
court detention centre following a hearing in a murder case held at the Dhaka
Metropolitan Third Sessions Judge Court.
Md Ripon Molla, in-charge of court detention site, filed a
lawsuit over the escape the very same day.
On 1 October 2025, police recaptured him from Feni.
