Prime Minister’s Adviser for Education and PMO Spokesperson Mahdi Amin said on Tuesday that sports would be introduced as a full-fledged subject in the curriculum from Class Four next year.
Speaking at a press briefing after
inaugurating the Summer National Sports Competition 2026 at Shaheed
Dhirendranath Dutta Stadium in Cumilla on Tuesday, he said the government was
giving the highest priority to sports and physical activities.
The government’s main goal is to integrate sports and physical activities deeply into the overall education system, including at the grassroots level, he said.
Mahdi said the nationwide competition had been organised on a large scale to institutionalise sports.
“Around 30,000 educational institutions participated in the competition, with students from Classes Six to Ten taking part. More than 300 talented students from across the country reached the final round after competing at different levels in chess, handball, swimming and kabaddi,” he noted.
Mahdi said the initiative would help
Bangladeshi students take the country to a new height on the global sporting
stage.
“Sports are not merely about winning or
losing; they are one of the best forms of education for character building,” he
said.
The playgrounds teach students to face
adversity and develop discipline, patience, self-confidence and respect for
opponents, he added.
Mahdi said Prime Minister’s Football Gold Cup
would also be organised as part of the government’s efforts to expand sports
and physical education.
He congratulated all the participants, saying
every student who had reached the national level had already demonstrated
excellence, regardless of the eventual result.
The event was attended, among others, by
Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan,
Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher Sumon, Cumilla-10 MP Mobasher
Alam Bhuiyan, Cumilla City Corporation Administrator Md Yousuf Molla Tipu,
Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education Director General Prof Dr Khan
Moinuddin Al Mahmud Sohel, Cumilla Education Board Chairman Prof Syed
Akhtaruzzaman and Cumilla Deputy Commissioner Rozi Akter.
