A Dhaka court on Monday placed Malaysian national Yang Don Seu, 43, on six-day remand in a case filed over the recovery of nine gold bars from him at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in the capital.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain passed the order after a hearing, said prosecution division Sub-Inspector Abu Bakar Siddique.

Earlier, Airport Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Mahbub Hossain, also the investigation officer of the case, produced the accused before the court and sought 10-day remand.

Police, in the remand petition, said the accused was initially questioned about the incident and it was learnt that he was an active member of an international gold-smuggling syndicate.

The plea said extensive interrogation of the accused was needed to identify the financiers supplying the illegal gold bars, determine where and to whom the bars were to be handed over, and identify and arrest his absconding and unidentified accomplices.

Earlier, the accused was arrested at around 4:00am on 4 October at HSIA, and nine gold bars weighing around 4.5 kilogrammes were recovered from his possession.

According to police, Yang Don Seu arrived in Dhaka from Kuala Lumpur on Malaysia Airlines flight MH-0196. The gold bars were found in his possession. Later, officials of the Customs House detained him, and a case was filed with Airport Police Station under the Special Powers Act.
