A Dhaka court on Monday placed two employees of Biman Bangladesh Airlines on a five-day remand each in a case filed over the recovery of 80 gold bars concealed inside their shoes at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The accused are Manik Mia and Mizanur Rahman.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain passed the order
after police produced the duo before the court with a 10-day remand prayer.
In the remand petition, the investigating officer, Airport Police Station Inspector Abul Qayum, submitted that custodial interrogation was essential to identify the origin of the smuggled gold, ascertain the involvement of accomplices, and bust the gold-smuggling syndicate operating inside the airport.
According to the case documents, officials of the Customs
Intelligence and Investigation Directorate took up positions at the airport on
Sunday, acting on a tip-off.
The officials intercepted and searched the two suspects
after noticing their suspicious movements on the tarmac following the landing
of an Emirates flight from Dubai.
During the search, officials recovered 80 gold bars concealed inside their shoes. Each bar weighed roughly 117 grammes, bringing the total weight of the seized cache to 9.34 kilogrammes.
Assistant Revenue Officer of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Circle Ruhani Islam filed a case under the Special Powers Act with Airport Police Station in connection with the incident.
