A Dhaka court on Monday imposed a travel ban on former general secretary of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League Siddiqi Nazmul Alam over allegations of illegally acquiring wealth.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior
Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir passed the order following a petition filed by
the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), said ACC Public Relations Officer Aktarul
Islam.
Earlier, on 4 October,
ACC Assistant Director and Investigating Officer Mohammad Jafar Sadek Shibli
filed a petition seeking a travel ban on Nazmul Alam.
According to the
petition, an investigation is underway into allegations that Nazmul Alam earned
money through unlawful means and attempted to legitimise the funds by
transferring them to bank accounts operated in his own name and in the names of
people linked to his interests.
The ACC said it had
learnt from a reliable source that Nazmul Alam was trying to leave the country
and flee abroad. It also said he was accused of laundering money abroad and
acquiring assets.
The ACC sought the travel ban, saying that restricting him from travelling abroad is necessary in the interest of a proper investigation.
