Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam said on Sunday that the country has embarked on a democratic journey after 17 years, and all must remain vigilant to ensure that the journey is not disrupted in any way.

He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the renovated central auditorium of Jagannath University (JnU).

The administrator said the institution had also played an important role in the country’s struggle for independence and the Liberation War, and now the university community is growing steadily through improvements in the quality of education.

Urging the university to play an important role at a time when society is witnessing various forms of social degradation, he said, “It has played important roles in the Language Movement, the Liberation War, the mass movement of the 1990s and the 2024 mass uprising. Its contributions are highly significant.”

He also assured the university authorities of cooperation in its overall development and in preserving the heritage of Old Dhaka.

JnU Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Rais Uddin presided over the programme, while Dhaka-7 lawmaker Hamidur Rahman attended as a special guest.

Teachers, student leaders and students of the university attended the event.
