The Special Committee on Constitutional Amendment of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) held its fifth meeting on Sunday at the Cabinet Room of the Parliament Complex with the committee chief and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed in the chair.
The committee, however, did not hold the press conference at
Media Centre of the Parliament that had been scheduled after the meeting,
leaving reporters to rely on an official press release issued by the public
relations wing of the Parliament Secretariat following the closed-door
proceedings.
According to the press release, the JS special committee has
widened its consultation process to include workers, ethnic minorities and
representatives of different sections of society as the government moves to
finalise its recommendations for the proposed 18th Amendment by the end of this
year.
Representatives of working people who contributed to the
2024 mass uprising and representatives of small ethnic communities attended the
meeting and placed proposals on various aspects of constitutional amendment.
The committee urged participants who have additional proposals to submit them in writing, saying both the recommendations made during meetings and those submitted in writing would be reflected in its report.
The committee said that it would invite representatives of
different professions and sections of society to its upcoming meetings in
phases. Women leaders, constitutional experts, academics, people and
organisations associated with the 2024 mass uprising, those involved in
drafting the July National Charter, Supreme Court judges and lawyers, teachers,
workers and other influential representatives will be consulted.
