Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam has announced plans to construct an “Anti-Fascism Biswajit Square” in the Jagannath University area, named after Biswajit Das.

He made the announcement while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of the renovated and modernized central auditorium of the university.

Activists of Chhatra League, now banned on terrorism charges, brutally hacked and beat Biswajit Das to death during an opposition movement, alleging he was a member of Chhatra Shibir.

The DSCC administrator announced the construction works for the structure named after Biswajit following a request by Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Rais Uddin.

In his speech, the DSCC administrator announced that responsibility for the beautification and maintenance of the historic Bahadur Shah Park would be entrusted to the Jagannath University administration and its students.

He said, “An important historical site like Bahadur Shah Park, which bears the memories of the Sepoy Revolution, cannot be left neglected and poorly managed. The university authorities and students must come forward to preserve it with the dignity it deserves.”

Highlighting the importance of students’ physical and mental development, the administrator also announced that Dhupkhola Field would be properly allocated for university students’ sporting activities. He also called on Jagannath University to take the lead in creating a cultural revolution centered around Old Dhaka.

Emphasizing the importance of civic awareness, the DSCC administrator said, “People follow the behaviour of students. Students must play a role in raising awareness about dengue prevention and stopping the indiscriminate dumping of garbage. Students themselves must come forward to save Dhaka city.”

Teachers, students, university officials, and senior officials of the city corporation were present at the event.
