With climate change increasingly forcing vulnerable communities from their homes and livelihoods, the Parliamentary Caucus on Climate Change and Displacement wants to work for developing a coordinated policy response to the growing crisis.
The first meeting of the caucus of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad
(JS) was held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Sunday with its chairman Gias
Uddin Quader Chowdhury in the chair.
Members of the JS caucus Md Amirul Islam Khan, Md Rashedul
Islam Rashed, Md Anwarul Haque, Barrister Rumeen Farhana and Marzia Begum
attended the meeting.
The meeting discussed a work plan for the caucus, with
emphasis on strengthening coordination among government ministries and agencies
dealing with climate change, water management, disaster response and
migration-related issues.
The caucus recommended inviting representatives of six key
government bodies to its next meeting-- the Environment Ministry; LGRD
Ministry; Internal Resources Division; Foreign Affairs Ministry; Water
Resources Ministry; and the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief.
The caucus also proposed forming a coordination committee involving representatives of the relevant ministries.
The meeting also discussed greater parliamentary engagement
with national and international initiatives on climate change and displacement.
Additional secretary of the Environment Ministry, managing
director of RMMRU, director general of Foreign Affairs Ministry and senior
officials of the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat were also present at the meeting.
