A Dhaka court on Sunday denied the bail petition of Jamaat-e-Islami leader and former lawmaker Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman and ordered that he be sent to jail in a case filed over allegedly creating disorder at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA).
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jamshed Alam passed
the order after a hearing, said Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi.
Earlier in the day, Akhtaruzzaman was brought to the
court lock-up around 1pm after completing his one-day remand. Later, police
produced him before the court at around 2:30pm and pleaded for his detention.
The investigation officer, in his detention plea,
told the court that Akhtaruzzaman had admitted to the incident during his
remand. The investigation into the case was underway and verification of the
allegations was still being conducted, making it necessary to keep him in
custody.
During the hearing, defence lawyer Abdul Razzaq and
others filed a bail petition on behalf of the accused, which was opposed by the
prosecution. After hearing both sides, the court sent him to jail, rejecting
the bail plea.
The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan
Police (DMP) arrested Akhtaruzzaman from his Cantonment residence in the
capital on Friday afternoon in a case filed over allegedly threatening an
airport official.
The case was filed after tension erupted at the HSIA
on Thursday over mismanagement, a shortage of luggage trolleys, delays in
receiving luggage and the non-arrival of Zamzam water. During the incident, he
allegedly threatened and intimidated airport officials.
