A Dhaka court on Friday placed four accused on different terms of remand in a case filed with Hatirjheel Police Station over an extortion attempt and shooting in the Bangla Motor area of the capital.
The main accused, expelled Jubo Dal leader Ferdous Ahmed
Simon, 38, was placed on four-day remand, while the other three accused—Omar,
32, Morshed, 25, and Md Shaon, 25—were placed on three-day remand.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ishrat Jahan passed the orders
following a police plea, said state prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon.
Earlier, Sub-Inspector Md Nasim, the investigation officer
of the case, produced the accused before the court and sought seven days remand
for interrogation.
Police sought remand to identify and arrest the absconding
accused, gather information about those involved in the incident, and collect
other relevant information for the sake of a proper investigation.
According to the case statement, the accused allegedly intercepted medicine trader Md Sohan, 35, in Bangla Motor around 7:15pm on 1 October and demanded Tk50,000 in extortion.
When Sohan refused, they allegedly assaulted him, with one
striking him on the head with a pistol butt. Later, the accused allegedly
returned and attempted to assault him again as the victim was being taken to hospital.
Police said several rounds of blank fire were discharged,
after which local people caught three of the accused. Simon was later detained
while allegedly firing two more blank rounds near a hotel and attempting to
flee.
Police later took all four accused into custody. A case was
filed with Hatirjheel Police Station under Sections 143, 341, 307, 323, 325,
385 and 506 of the Penal Code.
